Quakers Finish Regular Season, Winning 2 out of 3; Overall Record 15-3 Heading into Sectionals

Varsity - 2011 Season
Posted Monday, February 14, 2011 by RT

February 12--The Greeley boys varsity basketball team finished their regular season with 3 games in 3 days, a tough finish brought about by earlier snow cancellations.  First, on Thursday afternoon, Greeley lost a hard fought game to Port Chester, 60-57.  Despite the return to action of junior guard Justin Ciero, who had broken his foot leading the Greeley football team to the sectional finals, Greeley was unable to avenge their loss last week to Port Chester.  It was a back and forth first half, in which Port Chester led 16-15 after the first quarter and 33-27 at the half.  Greeley was led by Matt Townsend's 16 points (including 2 and-ones) and Brett Klein's 5 points.  Port Chester held Greeley to 9 points in the 3rd quarter and led by more than 10 at the beginning of the 4th quarter, largely as a result of Greeley's season high 24 turnovers.  After the Rams' starting guard Anthony Ordonez was knocked out of the game being fouled on a fast break, Greeley mounted a spirited comeback.  Led by full court pressure and multiple steals by Harrison Brown (who had 7 points in the second half), Teddy Graves and Justin Ciero, and Townsend's 7 offensive rebounds and 12 points, Greeley climbed back into the game during the fourth quarter and grabbed a brief 1-point lead 57-56 late in the game on a Connor Domershick 3-pointer off a pass from Justin Ciero.  But Port Chester was able to respond with a basket with less than a minute left and then was able to rebound several Greeley misses and hit some foul shots to clinch the game.  A potential game tying 3-pointer by Domershick rattled in and out at the buzzer.  Final:  Port Chester-60, Greeley-57.

Greeley rebounded the next night in their last regular season home and league game against Rye.  Greeley played in front of a typically large and supportive crowd--at halftime, Greeley seniors Austin Blumenfeld and Nick Weber were honored as "Fans of the Year".  Despite a quick start, including a Steven Haynes 3-pointer, baskets by Harrison Brown and Matt Xie and 10 points by Matt Townsend, Rye still led at the end of the first quarter 19-17 behind balanced scoring.  Greeley's defense stiffened in the second quarter, only allowing 7 points to the Garnets in the period.  Meanwhile, Greeley scored 13, led by a Josh Rosen 3-pointer, a layup by Justin Ciero, 4 points from Xie and 2 each from Brown and Graves.

Greeley built on their 30-26 halftime lead with a 22-10 third quarter, led by another Haynes' 3-pointer and Brown's 9 points (dominating the offensive glass and making a nice slicing drive for a reverse layup)--Brown finished the game a perfect 5-5 from the field and 3-3 from the foul line, playing one of his best all-around games of the year.  Brown, Xie and Townsend's interior defense and rebounding were key to the run as well, with the 3 combining for 12 defensive rebounds in the second half.  With Brown sitting for much of the fourth quarter due to foul trouble, Rye cut into the 52-36 Greeley lead, at one point reducing Greeley's margin to 55-49, before Townsend grabbed an offensive rebound and scored while being fouled.   Townsend's 9 points in the 4th quarter sealed the game for the Quakers, who finished 8-2 in their league, in sole possession of first place.  Final:  Greeley-63, Rye-56.

On Saturday, 15 hours after the end of their Friday night game, Greeley played their final regular season game against Blessed Sacrament as part of the Queen City Shootout Tournament at New Rochelle High School.  Greeley ensured they would finish the season on a strong note, blitzing Blessed Sacrament from the beginning.  Led by 7 assists from Graves and 5 by Xie, Greeley opened up leads of 17-13 after one quarter and 34-20 at halftime.  Brown, Xie and Townsend were very effective on the boards at both ends of the floor, with Brown scoring 8 points in the half and Townsend adding 11.  Greeley was also on from outside, with Domershick and Justin Ciero almost perfect from outside scoring 6 and 5 points in the half, respectively.  Greeley extended its lead to 51-31 at the end of the third quarter behind solid defense and unselfish, quick ball movement and Townsend continuing to control the boards (12 second half rebounds).  Greeley finished the game maintaining their lead, with Domershick finishing 4-5 from behind the 3-point line for a career high 12 points and Justin Ciero and his brother Jeremy Ciero playing on varsity together for the first time, combining to break the Blessed Sacrament press for a basket by Jeremy off a pass from his brother.

Townsend's 18 rebounds gave him a career total of 1003, putting him alongside Stepinac's senior Conroy Baltimore, who also achieved the 1000 point/1000 rebound double milestone this year.

                        Final:  Greeley-66, Blessed Sacrament-47.

Both the Greeley boys and girls varsity will enter the sectional playoffs as high seeds that hopefully will earn them home playoff games at the end of next week.  The playoff seedings will be determined on Wednesday, February 16.
