Quakers Defeat Rye 62-57; Coach Fernandes Becomes All-Time Winningest Greeley Boys Basketball Coach

Varsity - 2011 Season
Posted Tuesday, February 01, 2011 by RT

January 31--On Monday afternoon, the Greeley boys varsity basketball team travelled to Rye for a makeup game.  Playing in front of a sparse crowd (presumably the result of the makeup date and postponed midterms), Greeley looked sluggish and fell into past habits, falling behind Rye 9-2 early and ending the first quarter trailing 11-4.  Greeley fell behind 23-8 part way through the second quarter before finally getting started.  Greeley went on a 17-3 run, sparked by consecutive 3-pointers from Connor Domershick, 5 points from Harrison Brown and 10 points from Matt Townsend, with several nice feeds from Teddy Graves, Matt Xie and Josh Rosen during the quarter.

Greeley trailed 28-25 at halftime; once again Rye’s outside shooting allowed them to expand their lead back up to an 8-point margin, 36-28 part way through the third.  Greeley rallied late in the 3rd quarter to cut Rye’s lead back to 3 points, 41-38 by the end of the quarter.  Rosen hit a big 3-pointer, and Townsend’s block and drive led to a Brown fast break layup.  Graves also hit a jump shot off a loose ball, and made a nice alley-oop pass to Townsend for a 3-point play.

Greeley took their first lead of the game in the fourth quarter when Townsend hit a foul line jump shot while being fouled for another 3-point play.  Greeley extended their lead, including from a Rosen steal and coast-to-coast layup, several Graves drives (with one where the ball rolled around the rim several times before dropping through) and some Townsend jumpers, overcoming a strong Rye defense.  Clutch foul shooting from Townsend, Rosen and Xie sealed the win for the Quakers.  Rye hit a 3-pointer as time expired to make the final score 62-57.

                        Coach Fernandes Sets the Record

The win was the 231st for Coach Dave Fernandes, who is in his 18th year of coaching the Greeley boys varsity basketball team.  Coach Fernandes now has a record of 231-143, eclipsing the previous record for most wins held by long-time basketball coach and former athletic director Pete Kuczma, who posted a record of 230-155 in his 19 years coaching the Greeley boys varsity.

Greeley's record is now 12-1 (6-0 in their league).  Weather permitting, here is Greeley’s upcoming schedule, including a rematch against Rye:
